May was working at a grocery store. After her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six months ago, May had to step up to fulfil her son, Brain’s needs.
For her husband Frank, things deteriorated quickly. He didn’t need any assistance in the beginning. Lately, he needed more and more assistance.
He would apologize from May constantly with teary eyes. When May would ask why he was apologizing, he wouldn’t say anything else and only says “I’m sorry.”
Brian was her support. He was a growing up to be a great man. He had a great heart which he wouldn’t upset his mother.
Despite he was a healthy boy, one night he was holding his stomach as he was in pain.
“Mama, it hurts so bad.”
Brian was not a boy who would complain, so it made her panic. She rushed her son to the hospital. She knew the doctor, Melissa, who was in her 30s. She was a kind woman, but that day was different.
When she saw Brian, she became uncomfortable, and nervously explained that Brian needed a surgery because he had a severe case of appendicitis.
But Melissa told May that she can’t operate on Brian. May was shocked. She asked why and begged her as her son needed a surgery. His life was in danger.
Melissa asked then, “Don’t you know?”
May was confused. What she supposed to know?
“I can’t operate on him because… he’s my brother.”
May’s world collapsed on her. The world slipped under her feet. She felt dizzy. She then called a colleague, and then wanted to talk with May in private.
Melissa revealed that Frank was her father. She told May that Frank had a relationship with someone else, Melissa’s mother Molly.
Then she showed a picture where a young Frank was holding a blonde girl in his arms, where they were in a park.
Melissa told May that she was three when Frank left them. Her mother, Molly, tried to find Frank, but she couldn’t.
When Melissa found her father again, she learned that he had a family. She then decided not to talk because she didn’t want to ruin May and Brian’s lives.
Then May realized why Frank was constantly apologizing. “That explains so much,” May said as she was in tears. May invited Melissa to dinner. When Frank saw her, he immediately remembered his daughter despite he had Alzheimer’s.
