Abraham was devastated when his wife passed away. He was left alone at the age of 34, with his 5-year-old son. The news was given to him by his father-in-law. He called him and stated that Stacey passed away in an accident.
Abraham was on a business trip. Before he could come back, Stacey’s family buried her. He was there after the funeral.
“We didn’t want to wait,” her mother said, “It was better this way.”
Abraham was too devastated to argue. He didn’t say nothing. He was looking at his wife’s gravestone, where their son was crying for his momma.
Two months had passed. A nanny was looking after Luke while Abraham was at work. One day, as he wanted a change in the air, Abraham took his son to the beach. It would be good.
They went to a beachfront hotel. On their third day, while playing on the beach, Luke pointed at a woman and stated that his mother was back. “Dad, look, Mom’s back!”
There, a woman was standing. Her back to Abraham’s. She was at the same height, and she had the same hair. Abraham was frozen. His heart skipped a beat.
Then the woman turned back. Her eyes got wide opened when she saw Luke and Abraham. Then she grabbed the arm of the man next to her and ran away.
Abraham took his son back to their room. After Luke was asleep, he called Stacey’s mother about what happened. He asked why they buried her so fast, without waiting him. The woman said that Stacey’s body was ruined, so they didn’t want him to see his wife like this.
Abraham hung up, and thought that something was not right. When the morning arrived, Abraham left Luke at the daycare of the hotel. He then went to the beach. He hoped to see Stacey or the man next to her.
Then he heard her voice.
“I knew you’d look for me.”
Stacy was behind him.
“Why?”
“It’s complicated, Abraham.”
“Explain.”
Stacy then revealed that she is pregnant and that Abraham is not the father. She had an affair. After she found out that she was pregnant, she made a plan with her parents and ran away.
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t face you. This way, everyone could move on.”
“Move on? I thought you were DEAD! Do you know what it’s like to tell your five-year-old son his mother is never coming home?”
“Abraham, please try to understand—”
“Understand what? That you’re a liar? A cheater? That you let me grieve while you ran off with your lover?”
Then a crying voice stopped their yelling.
“Mommy?”
Luke was there, looking at them with teary eyes.
“Luke, honey—”
Abraham took Luke and went to their room while Luke was crying for mommy.
At the room, while both of them were crying Abraham explained to his son that mommy did a terrible thing and lied to us. He told him that mommy stopped loving them, but Abraham made sure that he will love Luke until the end of his time.
A month later Abraham was in his lawyer’s office. “Full custody and generous alimony,” she said. “Given the circumstances, Mrs. Stacey didn’t contest anything.”
I nodded, numb. “And the gag order?”
“In place. She can’t discuss the deception publicly without severe penalties.”
Few months after the divorce, Abraham received a text from Stacey. She wrote that her boyfriend dumped her and that she missed Luke terribly. She was pleading to see Luke and talk with Abraham.
He directly deleted the message.
