Member of the class of 2028 and an athlete of the US Air Force Academy 19-year-old Avery Koonce was found unresponsive in her dorm room on the 4th of October. After a medical expert released an autopsy report about her passing, the illness which took her life was treatable.
El Paso County Coroner’s Office had revealed cause of death of Avery Koonce as the result of “Paeniclostridium sordelli sepsis complicating parainfluenza laryngotraceobronchitis.”
The cause of death is meaning that Koonce passed away after an untreated pneumonia.
Coroner stated that Paeniclostridium sordelli is a deadly anaerobic bacterium, which can cause a quick death after toxic shock. The coroner stated that this happened after a lung infection caused by parainfluenza.
The coroner stated that Koonce’s condition “could have been treated with penicillin.”
After her passing, Koonce’s teammates shared their grief on social media. Academy Superintendent Lt Gen Tony Bauernfeind shared, “We lost an incredible teammate last night. While only with us for a short time, Avery positively impacted her unit, her intercollegiate team, and her class – her loss will be felt across USAFA.”
