They would talk and laugh, and sometimes Debbie would walk the old woman in the park. “You can call me for anything Marlene,” Debbie said to her, as she would say, “What would I do without you my sweet child.”
One day, Debbie asked about Marlene’s family. “Steve,” Marlene said, her son was meaning the world to her but she revealed that her son wouldn’t visit her much.
Sadly, Debbie needed to went to her mother’s house one day, as she called Debbie and revealed that she was being rushed to hospital. Debbie went to her mother’s side immediately then.
Before she left, she went to Marlene, and bought her some groceries and arranged everything she would need. Marlene’s next-door neighbour knew that Debbie was gone, and she stated that when she could find time, she would check Marlene.
Ten days later, while Debbie was cooking for her family, her phone got ranged. It was an unknown number. “Debbie? Are you the woman who stopped taking care of my mother?”
The person was Steve. Debbie couldn’t believe what she just heard.
“My mother is out of milk, and you are not there to provide for her. Why did you left without buying her a milk?”
As Debbie was shocked, she tried to explain that she was at her parents’ home for her mother was hospitalized.
Steve responded, as he was a terrible man, “Well, that is not good enough. I can’t be there whenever you go away. If you care for my mother, then do it properly!”
The frustration of Debbie turned into anger. “She’s your mother you imbecile!” she yelled. “Maybe be there for her when she needs something, for once!”
She then put the phone down. Her mother heard the conversation, she stated that she was doing alright, and she was also had her husband with her. Few days later Debbie returned.
She checked Marlene as soon as she returned. She also learned that Karen bought milk for Marlene, and that they had no idea Steve called Debbie. Marlene was shocked to learn it.
On the coming weeks, Debbie talked with Marlene and explained that she needs to travel more since her mother too was in need of her. Marlene understood. A week later, Steve was there to be with his mother, as he had no other option but to step in.
