Daniel and his family were at the church for the baptism of their baby, Emmy. It was like a dream for Daniel. He always wanted to build his own family, and have a daughter. Since college, he always dreamt of this.
Now, she was at the church for the baptism of her little angel, Emmy. His wife Jane was quietly waiting, as it was an unusual habit for her. He thought that she was nervous.
He asked to his wife that if she was okay, and Jane told him that she was a bit nervous. It was normal Daniel thought.
Then, Father Gabriel welcomed and greeted them. The ceremony started with prayers and blessings.
When the priest held Emmy, all church went silent. Gabriel was frozen with shock. Daniel thought that something was wrong.
As he asked to the priest if something was wrong, Gabriel turned to Daniel with his pale face, and told him that this child was his brother’s.
Daniel couldn’t say anything. He was too shocked to speak. He tried to utter some words, but it stopped with the first sounds.
Then Gabriel told Daniel that he and his brother had a birthmark, and then he showed Emmy’s birthmark, which was identical to Gabriel was carrying.
When he turned his head, Daniel saw that Jane was running outside of the church.
“This can not be real!” Daniel whispered. He was betrayed, he was devastated. He ran after Jane, and chased her.
When he returned home, he found Jane packing things into her suitcase.
“You’re not leaving,” Daniel said. He wanted to learn the truth.
As Jane was about to say something else, Daniel stopped her and asked for the truth once again. Then she went silent for a moment. She apologized. Daniel didn’t want an apology. He wanted to learn the truth.
“It was a mistake, Daniel. I… I was lonely, and Matthew… it just happened.”
“I love you, Daniel. I do, and I never wanted to hurt you, I swear.”
But Daniel was destroyed. He still couldn’t believe that this was real. “What about Emmy? Are you leaving her too?” He asked.
Jane stated that she was not meant to be a mother, and added that she doesn’t even know where she will be going and that she didn’t want to pull Emmy with herself. Then she was gone for good.
There, Daniel was left alone at the home, thinking what to do about Emmy. Was she going to be his daughter, or could he give up on her.
