A woman from Texas, Shelley Pitts, became pregnant when she was 14. She was scared because she was a child herself too.
Pitts talked with her boyfriend Sidney, and they decided to keep the baby. Sidney wanted their baby to have the name “Sidney Jamal or Jamal Donnell” and Pitts wanted to name her son “Elijah.”
They decided not to inform their parents as they were scared. Once her baby bump started showing, Pitts wore baggy clothes to hide it.
Later everyone learned their story. It was in late 80s, and they were the only interracial couple in Texas, who named their relationship.
They were in love, and for that reason they didn’t care about what people said to them in that time.
In the end, the young couple talked with their parents about Pitts’ pregnancy, but the parents wanted their baby to given up for adoption.
On the 29th of March, 1988, Pitts went through labor alone, as her mother couldn’t reach in time, and Sidney’s parents didn’t let him be with her. “He was perfect, but he wasn’t meant to be mine,” Pitts thought when she held her son.
“I saw him having my eyes and his father’s smile. I wondered if he was happy,” Pitts said. She married when she was in her 20s, and had three daughters. She is a single mother.
She was in pain for giving up her son, and always wanted to meet him. She also knew that her son was called Eric. She decided to search for her son online.
On a matching site, she had an %81 match with a man who was born on the 29th of March, 1988, in Dallas, Texas. The boy was adopted when he was 4 months old and was born with brown eyes, brown hair, and unknown ethnicity.
Then she found Daniel Smith on Facebook, and decided to message. “Happy birthday. I’m your birth mom. I don’t know how else to say that without just blurting it out. I pray you respond. I can’t believe I actually found you (sic).”
Smith responded as he stated that he would love to talk. They bonded over messages, where Pitts told her son that his father was killed in 1992.
“This is like a dream almost. Just know I love you. I have never once been upset with you,” Smith said.
On the 29th of April, 2021, Smith met with her biological parent in Texas after 33 years of separation.
“My whole being is complete in ways I never knew it could be. My heart is so ridiculously full. My son is home,” Pitts wrote on social media.
“Living in regret does nothing but allow negativity to try to wiggle it’s way in so I can’t live there. There’s nothing but love, hope, and a true appreciation for God’s mercy in this space (sic).” The mother and son shared from their social media account.
