Clark and Emmy were in a perfect relationship, except if we discount the existence of her MIL, Darla.
She was a walking red flag for anyone to have a relationship with. at the Christmas dinner Emmy was invited to, Darla gifted her the same thing the cousins received. The reason for it was that she ran out of time for her.
Then she added, “but really, you should try to be more like them anyway.”
That repeated many times in their history of meetings.
During the engagement party, after Emmy’s grandmother gifted her engraved Mikasa crystal champagne flutes, Darla intervened and stated that these were note nice enough for them, and offered the box in her hand.
A box of ugly goblets. She was frustrated, and her grandmother was embarrassed. She then told her “I’d love to see what you use at home; they’re probably as bad as your jokes.”
The wedding was the last straw. This was supposed to be the best day of her life. Her dream wedding. The guests were there, waiting for Emmy to walk down the aisle.
Darla was late to the wedding. She then appeared with her black dress, as if she was attending to a funeral, instead of her son’s wedding.
When Emmy asked for the reason of Darla’s black dress, she told Emmy that her son marrying Emmy was no more than a funeral.
She was furious. She kept her cool for the sake of her wedding. In the days to come, she talked with her husband, and Clark was aware the disturbance his mother was for everyone, not just for Emmy. Other relatives and friends already told him that his mother was a pain in the butt.
During Darla’s 58th birthday, the karma hit back. Darla arranged a grand meeting saloon, and she prepared it with care. When she made her grand enterance, no one was there to celebrate her birthday. People declined her invitation.
Despite the terrible things she did, Emmy was upset for her.
