In the six states, over 230 people lost their lives due to Hurricane Helene. There are still thousands of people considered to be missing. Twin babies, Khyzier and Khazmir Williams, are the youngest victims of the terrible natural disaster.
The five-week-old twins died alongside their mother, Kobe Williams. A tree fell over Kobe’s mobile home while the mother was staying in the trailer with her children to protect them from the storm.
“Nobody was taking the storm seriously,” Kobe’s mother, Mary Jones William shared. “Then it started, and the wind was so loud. When the lights went off, Kobe got really scared. She was worried about the babies.”
Kobe and Mary were talking through the phone, and then they stopped for a while. When Mary tried to call her daughter once again, she couldn’t reach.
Then she tried to investigate Kobe’s house, and was devastated after she saw that a tree had fallen over her trailer. “I started screaming, ‘Kobe! Answer me! Please answer me!’ It was so dark and I couldn’t see anything except branches.”
“I asked, are they alive? And (one officer) said, ‘It’s bad, don’t go in there,” the grieving mother said. “And I just lost it. I lost it.”
“She was holding the babies in her arms when the tree fell on her head. She was trying to protect them,” Markeya Jones, Mary’s granddaughter shared.
May mother and her twins rest in peace.
