The teen idol Tom Cassidy had his breakthrough after his role as Keith Partridge, on the famous TV show, “The Partridge Family.”
But being famous was hard for him. He felt his role as Keith got stuck on him.
“I was pigeonholed as a teen idol [and] there’s no credibility.” Cassidy said, and added that it was “a very empty, isolated, lonely existence.”
He struggled with substance abuse, where he revealed in 2008 that he shared his struggle with alcohol. He was caught with a DUI in 2010, and had two accidents, as one in 2013, and in 2014.
In his appearance during Dr. Phil show, David talked about his relationship with his son, Beau Cassidy.
“I was the ideal father. I would do anything for him. He’s the love of my life, and probably the reason that I didn’t kill myself. Because of him,” Cassidy said.
In 2017, David revealed that he was diagnosed with dementia, and his struggles deepened. “I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming.”
“In the end, the only way I knew she recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room… I feared I would end up that way.”
As his mother struggled with dementia too, he is afraid that his son will experience the same things as he did back in his youth.
“I want you to promise me you’ll find a way to let me go. Don’t let me live like that.”
In November of 2017, David passed away at the age of 67, caused by organ failure where he stayed in a Florida hospital for days.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy. David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long.” His publicist, Jo-Ann Geffen announced.
Back in 2012, David talked about fatherhood as, “As a father, I do everything my dad didn’t do. My son Beau’s birth changed my life. I’ve gone to every baseball and basketball game, every performance.”
