Matt and Emma had decided on their wedding day, as they decided a day in February, to celebrate their anniversary with Valentine’s Day. Each detail about the wedding was ready.
Matt and Emma were ticking like clockwork and their relationship was great.
But Emma had an 8 p.m. rule, which was about to change their lives and relationship.
She talked it over a dinner at a restaurant. As they started to dinner, Emma revealed the matter she wanted to discuss.
“I want to do something with you after our wedding. I would like to sit at 8 p.m., and talk about some things in our checklist and look at how we are doing as a couple.”
“You want a performance review for our marriage?”
“No, more like something to improve our relationship and see the things we missed in our lives.”
“That sounds weird Emma, I mean come on, a rating system for our marriage?”
“It will help us to keep our relationship healthier, and a way to keep our channels to talk open.”
“Doing this every day is too much for me.”
“But only for 15 minutes honey, to make sure we don’t drift away from each other. To see the things we missed.”
“We are together for the last four years without drifting apart. Why we should drift apart after our wedding. This is absurd.”
As their conversation turned into a fight after Matt started to act defensive, he said something shocked Emma. He wanted to call the wedding off as he stated that he can’t do this anymore.
Emma was hurt so much, she was petrified. Matt wanted some space in his life, and a daily review was too much for him.
After two weeks of solitude, Emma finally opened the call from Matt’s mother. Ginny wanted Emma to give Matt some time. She explained that her son was not in himself.
When Emma talked with her parents about what happened, her parents told her that in relationships, being too planned is not a good way to try work things out. The asked Emma to give some flexibility to Matt. They explained that he would be there for her when she needs him, as he always does.
Then Matt’s sister Jen talked to Emma. She explained that her brother felt like he was being graded by the woman he loved, and if he would fail, he was afraid that Emma would leave him.
Emma then understood that she thought wrong. A relationship was not a project. Living beans with conscious minds were in it and that meant something. It was a complex thing to find a way with a compass, their heart.
