Jack woke up happily that day. He was drinking his coffee while peeking out of the window. The outside was quiet, and peaceful.
When he heard his daughter coming downstairs, he felt something was different. She didn’t want to eat breakfast, and was talking coldly against her father.
He asked what was wrong, and Lily responded, “Nothing.”
Before she left, Jack told his daughter that she can talk about whatever she wanted. Then Lilly stopped. Then nodded and left.
Later that day, while Jack was doing the laundry, he found a note in his daughter’s jacket. He was shocked when he read the note.
“I’m your real father. Meet me on the 17th of September, behind the school.”
Jack’s heart skipped a beat. He was frozen. Then he remembered. Today was the 17th. But he was Lily’s father. He raised her since she was born. His wife was dead for six years, and they were in love. She wouldn’t do this to him, would she?
He wanted to talk with Lily and learn what was happening. But he wanted to see the “real father” of Lily.
He went behind the school with his car, and started to wait. Then he saw Jeff, an old colleague of Jack. He was a quiet man, but Jack wasn’t expecting to see someone he knew.
Then Jeff turned to Lily. “I didn’t think that you would come. Your mother didn’t want to hurt you. Or him.”
Jack was listening then from behind the wall. He then confronted Jeff. “What the hell is going on here?”
Jeff’s face went pale. He wasn’t expecting to see Jack in there. “Oh, Jack. I was going to talk with you too.”
“Talk about what? This nonsense? Who do you think you are to tell my daughter these?”
Jeff revealed that they were having an affair with Kate. He claimed that Lily was his daughter. Jack didn’t believe that his wife would cheat on him. Even if she did, she would’ve told him.
Jeff stated that Kate didn’t want to hurt her family. She stopped after Lily, and decided to keep this as a secret.
Then he knelt towards his daughter. “No matter what, you are my daughter. I’ve been loving you since the day you were born. Since the first time I held you in my arms. I’m your father, and you are my daughter.”
Then he turned to Jeff, “Leave! NOW!”
“I know this is hard, but I’m not going anywhere. She deserves to know the truth.”
“You never will be!”
On the days to come, Jack couldn’t sleep at all. He was devastated. He then started his research about Jeff, and his past. Then he found out that Jeff was fired from the company after he lied about his resume.
He was a natural liar, as he had a history of manipulative actions in the work place too. He received some warnings about his actions.
Then he talked with his daughter about Jeff. How terrible of a man he was, and how he was fired from the company due to his lies.
But Lily had a question in her mind, what if he was telling the truth?
“It doesn’t matter what he said, I’m your dad. I’ve always been your dad, and nothing will ever change that.”
“I love you, Dad.”
“I love you too, kiddo. Always.”
Then a police officer called Jack few days later. They informed Jack that Jeff was caught, and that he had some files about him and Lily in his house. The man was a maniac who would create problems in families, and use them to ransom money. He was a blackmailer.
He decided to keep this away from his daughter, as he didn’t want her to be affected by it. He kissed her on the forehead, and make pancakes to her.
