There are thousands of Jesus depiction, and each of them the recreation of Jesus in the minds of the artists who draw them. For example, the most famous Jesus depictions are Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” (1498), Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement” (1541) or El Greco’s “Christ Carrying the Cross” (1540).
A Dutch photographer, Bas Uterwijk, revealed that he used a neural network which was trained on creating faces from the paintings for this effort.
“I used several cultural depictions of Jesus of Nazareth of Byzantine and Renaissance origin including Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi”, and the Turin Shroud, tweaking the ethnicity to a more convincing Middle-Eastern face.” Uterwijk said.
The Dutch photographer shared that he “felt it lacked any historical accuracy,” and then he “changed the hair and beard to a more credible length and style for the time and region,” to “brought in elements found in some Fayum mummy portraits, pushing the renaissance art to the background.”
“The result is an artistic impression of how this man could have looked, more than it is a scientific search for an exact likeness.”
After a study of Semite skulls, British forensic experts and Israeli archaeologists created 3D portrait of Jesus.
The team used the X-ray of three Semite skulls and used a computer program to reveal details. The program computed the muscle and skin density for experts to build a 3D portrait.
The team used old prescriptions of the era, and found out that Jesus had dark eyes and probably a beard. They also stated that he should have a shorter hair since a bible passage reads, “If a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him.”
