The Halloween was around the corner, and the whole neighbourhood was happy that the celebrations will be great as always.
Kevin, who was eleven, excited that he was going to collect more candy than he collected on the last year. His friends and he was ready with their costumes.
Each and every house in the neighbourhood was decorated carefully, except one. Mrs. Kimbly’s home was standing dull as always.
That caught the eye of little Kevin.
Mrs. Kimbly was a lonely woman, and she wasn’t that friendly as she wouldn’t attend to any neighbourhood events.
Kevin had helped her with the lawn or carry her groceries. She was a kind old lady, but she alone.
He knocked her door. Mrs. Kimbly opened the door, and looked from behind the door who was knocking her door. “What do you want, Kevin?”
Kevin told her that he noticed the house being undecorated. He offered help to the old lady to decorate the house.
But Mrs. Kimbly angrily said no and shut the door.
As Keving told her mother what happened, Sarah told her son that he should leave it as she remembered something about the matter. Kevin saw that. But he was keen to decorate old lady’s home. He arranged a small wagon, and filled it with decorations.
He carefully decorated the house with lightnings and pumpkins. He used some toy spiders and he was finished.
As he was proudly looking at his job, Mrs. Kimbly’s voice was heard. “I told you not to decorate my house!”
It was clear that Mrs. Kimbly hated Halloween, as she picked a pumpkin and threw it onto the ground. It got smashed as it scared Kevin.
As she came to her senses, she saw the fear Kevin was in and as she was about to apologize, Kevin ran away.
After the trick or treat, Kevin decided to go and shared them with Mrs. Kimbly. He then noticed that the old lady was not at home.
He waited for the old lady, sitting on her porch while eating some of the candies. Then he saw Mrs. Kimbly opening the door behind him. The old lady was not in the same anger she was when she saw her home.
He offered some candy to the old lady. The old lady apologized. She told Kevin that since she doesn’t have any kids or grandchildren, being alone in a holiday was hard for her.
“But you don’t have to be alone,” Kevin said as he held Mrs. Kimbly’s hand. “You can still enjoy it with the rest of us. We’d be happy to have you join in.”
