Mark and May bought a house in a silent and peaceful neighborhood. Their house wa s sitting next to an old house, where Mrs. Jane Harper was living in. She was a strange old woman who had a creepy appearance.
Both May and Mark thought that she had some weird vibe as they were thinking that she was a weird old lady.
The old lady Jane Harper would peek out of her window in secrecy, as if she was trying to spy on them. People in the neighborhood told Mark some strange stories about how Jane lost her husband in strange circumstances.
That day, May was sick and took a day off from work. She was lying on the couch, watching TV. Then their dog Max stood up and started to growl against the window. At that moment May saw Jane sneaking into their yard with a small shovel.
Max was obsessed digging under the oak tree, and Jane was digging there too.
Then May yelled at Jane Harper, “Mrs. Harper! What are you doing?”
Jane went pale as she slowly turned towards May. She had something on her face. Was it fear? Or guilt maybe?
“That’s our yard, Mrs. Harper. What are you digging up? Why are you acting so strange?”
Then Jane knelt down and pulled a bag covered in dirt from the hole she dug. Then she pulled some gold and diamonds inside the bag. She relieved with a sigh and then started to explain.
“My husband hid these some time ago. He found this treasure in the forest as he was searching for something with his metal detector.”
“A treasure?” May was surprised.
“Yes, and it is not an ordinary treasure. It is from an ancient era. Then they found out about the treasure. They found our property. They… They…”
The old woman started to cry.
“They threatened us. They told my husband that they would do horrible things to me. The stress and anxiety took my husband’s life. After he passed away, they left me alone as they believed that Frank lost the treasure.”
“I’m sorry that they lived through so much Mrs. Harper. Come, let me offer you some tea.”
As they talked, May told Jane to donate the treasure to a museum. She explained that she should get rid of it as she doesn’t need any money. She already had her own home and her children had their own lives and successful careers.
“I’m tired of living in fear. It’s time to let it go.”
May and Jane went together to the nearest museum and explained the situation. The museum authorities took the treasure, and called the police officers. The officers explained that they will help with Jane’s protection as they assured her that they will hunt the people who threatened her down.
