Emma was 15, her friends would party all day while she would spend time with her grandma. Rosa would love to teach her granddaughter things, or spend time at her garden.
Her uncle would watch them as he would be bothered. He would think and say that Emma was wasting her time on Rosa.
When Bill would ask her why she is staying with her, Emma would say, “Because I actually care about my Grandma, Uncle Bill. You should try it sometime.”
Rosa wanted from Emma to stay always true to herself.
It was few days before Rosa’s 89th birthday. Emma’s father Matt wanted to talk with his daughter. He revealed that his mother Rosa lost her ability to hear.
“But… but she was fine!” Emily said as she was shocked.
The doctors revealed to Matt that it is not that uncommon at Rosa’s age.
No matter what, Emma and her mother Jen decided to throw a birthday party for Rosa. They wanted to make it more visual than audial, and used old pictures which Rosa would love to see.
At the birthday party, while Emma was attending to her grandma, her aunt and uncle were talking about the inheritance as if their mother was dead.
Emma was angry, “How can you talk about Grandma like that?”
“Zip it up, you silly little girl. This is grown-up talk.”
Emma couldn’t believe what her relatives were talking about. Her grandmother was there, watching things without hearing what was happening. For a second, Emma forgot that her grandmother Rosa was deaf and asked if she was okay.
Rosa smiled at Emma, and patted her head.
When everybody was gone, Emma went to her grandmother, who was sitting at her chair. “Emma, dear. Come sit with me.”
“Grandma? You… you can hear me?”
She then revealed that it was a play to hear what everyone truly was thinking, for she believed that her time was close to the end.
A month later, Rosa passed away in her sleep. Emma was crying while her aunt May and uncle Bill were excited to hear what they received from the inheritance. Matt was crying and comforting his daughter Emma, while Jen was trying to comfort them both.
A week later the lawyer called everyone to read Rosa’s will. Then it is revealed that Rosa left everything to Emma, which she would be able to do whatever she wanted once she was 18. She left the house, the cottage and all her wealth to her granddaughter.
When Bill and May argued and protested, the lawyer pulled a voice recorder and revealed their terrible comments about Rosa. The lawyer told them that they can leave since they have no place in Rosa’s will.
As Rosa received all Rosa’s wealth, she only took some money for her college fund and the house, as she left the rest of the money to be split between charities.
