When Gemma’s son Mark introduced his girlfriend Alice to his mother, she was surprised because Alice was far from what she imagined for her son.
Mark was a man who wanted to be a lawyer for the people and children who can’t defend themselves, while Alice was a self centered woman who worked as a freelancer coder from her own apartment.
But their relationship was working, and Gemma never interfered with it, as she was sure that her son was in love.
As Mark always received scholarships, the money Gemma and her husband James saved for Mark’s studies was left to use, and they decided to give it to Mark and Alice to use it for their wedding.
Since Gemma didn’t have a daughter, she thought it would bring Alice closer to her.
When it was time for wedding planning, their differences showed themselves. Gemma advised roses while Alice wanted peonies.
Then Gemma offered that she should decide everything and tell her what she wants so there won’t be any clashes. As Alice decided on everything, she wanted her bridesmaids to wear pink.
When Alice picked some dresses for the bridesmaids, she showed the pictures of the dresses she chose. She didn’t like the one Alice chose, and advised to pick the second dress on the picture.
Then Alice told her that she will choose whatever she wants. Gemma was frustrated. “Alice is not even considering my opinion, and I’m paying for the dress!”
James told his wife to focus on herself, and let the kids handle the wedding planning. She accepted her husband’s advice and she did focus on her dress.
She bought an emerald green dress for herself.
When she arrived at the venue, she directly went to bride’s room to compliment Alice before the wedding started. When Alice saw Gemma, she started to cry uncontrollably.
“Why did you do this to me, Gemma? Your dress is my dream dress, but in a different color.”
“Alice, I didn’t even notice, they are not even looking the same in different colors.”
“How could you make this day about yourself. You did this because I choose what I’ve liked and didn’t listen to your advises.”
Then Mark entered into the room and asked what was happening in there.
As they explained the situation, Mark wanted his mother to get along just for the day, “For me mom, please.”
For her son’s happiness, Gemma went and bought a new dress for herself.
What do you think? Did Gemma do the right thing, or should she stand for herself instead of stepping back against her daughter-in-law?
