As Elly’s mother, Jane, told her not to visit for her house would be under renovations for three months. This wasn’t something normal in their relationship. She decided to surprise her.
It was strange. Her mother’s garden was looking neglected. She would love her garden, and she would do no such a thing.
The door was unlocked, it wasn’t normal. There were no signs of any renovation. The house was incredibly clean and sterile. It was like a hospital.
She called for her mother, but there was no response. She found her picture, where the glass of the frame was filled with fingerprints. Someone was clearly touching the picture a lot.
Then she heard a creaking from upstairs. She slowly climbed the stairs.
There she found her mother in her bedroom. She was frail and gaunt. Her hair was gone. Elly couldn’t believe what happened to her mother.
When Jane saw her daughter, she said that she shouldn’t be here. She didn’t want her daughter to see her like this. Jane had cancer, and that’s why she was looking like this. Her condition consumed her.
“I didn’t want to burden you, sweetheart. You’ve been working so hard for that promotion. I thought… I thought I could handle this on my own.”
“Handle it on your own? Mom, I’m your daughter! I should have been here! I should have known!”
Jane apologized, while Elly slowly embraced her mother.
That week, Elly moved in to help her mother. Despite she didn’t see her for few weeks, she was able to be with her mother in her final days, where they laughed and cried together.
Before she passed away, her final words to Elly was, “You’re going to be okay, Elly. You’re so strong… my amazing daughter. I love you so much.”
