Eve would visit her son’s home where he was living 30 miles away from her with his wife and son. When she was not able to visit him, she would send gifts to her grandson, Mike, daughter-in-law Jess, and her son Mark.
She decided to surprise them with a visit. She pulled up on the driveway, and then a package caught her eye. It was peeking on the top of the trash can. It was familiar.
She sent this package few days ago. Her son or grandson wouldn’t throw a gift away from her, but Jess might, she thought.
She then put on a fake smile, and knocked the door. When Jess saw Eve, she was shocked. She put on a fake sweet voice and greeted her.
Eve used the same tactic and responded the same. She told her that she missed her grandson, and wanted to spend some time with him.
Eve noticed that Jess was nervous. Mark was still at the work, and Mike was in her arms as he missed his grandma too.
They spend the time while they waited for Mark, playing and faking smiles and sweet words to each other. But Mike’s presence was calming Eve down. Eve was sure that Jess was faking the whole sweet daughter-in-law role.
She returned back to her home. On the next day, she decided to teach a lesson to her daughter-in-law.
She bought a $10 ring from thrift store, and she wrapped it and sent to Jess. Then she drove there and started to watch what was going to happen.
Then she saw Jess throwing the package into the trash can without even checking it. Eve waited until garbage truck collect the trash.
She then called Jess and asked if she received the package she sent. She said “Oh, yes! Thank you!”
Then Eve explained that she was glad to hear that and that she should show the ring she sent to Mark since it was a family heirloom, and that it was quite expensive.
“Of course Eve! Thank you again!” Jess said, and she rushed outside to check the trash can.
When she noticed that the can was empty, she directly went to dumping ground. She started to search around, as if she could find it in there. Then Eve went towards her. Jess was shocked and went pale.
She then revealed that she fooled her. Eve told that the ring was worth $10, and that it was not a heirloom. Jess was mad, she asked why she did that. Eve told her that she knew how her gifts were going to the trash can.
Jess stopped talking. She apologized as she realised the situation. They returned back to home together, and Mark was shocked when he saw his wife covered in dirt. When he asked what happened, before Jess talked, Eve intervened and stated that she needed help with a garden issue, and Jess was there to help her.
Jess hugged to Eve, and apologized once again. A week later, Eve found gifts in her mailbox.
