Mel was only thinking of a glass of wine as she was about to leave the workplace. She poured a glass of wine and was ready to watch a romcom, but then her door got knocked.
Her best friend Jen was at the door with her children five-year-old Dylan and two months old baby mike.
She told Mel that she had to go to the hospital urgently, and asked if she can babysit her children for a couple of hours.
Mel thought something serious happened, and accepted without asking questions, as all good friends would.
She didn’t hear back from Jen that day. When the morning arrived, she called her but she couldn’t reach to her. Days passed, and she was not there. She filed a missing person report, but no luck.
She was the carer of Dylan and Mike, as she couldn’t leave them anywhere. Weeks, months and years passed. She became their mother, as they started to call her.
During Dylan’s school’s parent-teacher meeting, he introduced Mel as his mother. She couldn’t hold her tears back. She was more than just a guardian for them.
Seven years passed. They were on a beach as they went to vacation together. While the children were playing on the beach, Dylan suddenly pointed to a woman and asked that if that was her.
When Mel turned her head, she saw Jen. Her best friend who left her children in Mel’s care and ran away.
Dylan rushed towards her and asked angrily why did she left them. The woman was angry too. She told Dylan that he was confusing her with someone. As Mel picked Mike up, she went towards them.
Dylan screamed that his true mother was Mel and that he is hating Jen. Mel took the kids away, as she didn’t want them to be devastated.
That evening, their door got knocked, it was Jen. She was the cleaning lady of the hotel they were staying in. Mel was shocked.
She then revealed the truth.
She explained that she was in a dark place, and that she was not able to care for her kids, and as she didn’t want them to get hurt, she entrusted them to her.
Mel asked why she didn’t get any help. Then she stopped because she realised that she helped her children with the best way she can. She explained that she had no other choice.
Then Dylan saw Jen, he stepped in and gave a dollar to her and told her that they can clean the bathroom in a cold voice.
Then he pushed her outside while Jen was uncontrollably crying, and hugged to Mel. That night, she comforted her children. Dylan and Mike were too young to understand but Mel now knew the truth.
Dylan asked to go back to their home then. And they did.
That year, Mel tried to communicate with Jen, where she wanted to help her. After a set of therapy, Jen started to live normally, and within four years, she became a part of their lives.
