The 73-year-old legendary actress Shelley Duvall is now unrecognizable. Her career started when her boyfriend threw a party where Duvall received an offer from Brewster McCloud.
After Duvall appeared in Altman’s 3 Women in 1977, she received an award with her performance.
She later starred in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (1977), Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) and Time Bandits (1981).
After the shooting of The Shining, Duvall had struggled mentally. She was affected by her role incredibly.
After her first marriage ended in 1974, she started to her relationship with Paul Simon. Their relationship ended two years after. That was the main reason why Duvall struggled mentally.
Also, Kubrick’s demands had led her struggles to rise as he wanted everything to be perfect.
“It was very hard,” Duvall said.
“Jack was so good–so damn scary,” Duvall said, adding that “It was a difficult scene, but it turned out to be one of the best in the film.”
In 2021, Duvall talked with the Hollywood Reporter. “(Kubrick) doesn’t print anything until at least the 35th take,” she said.
“After a while, your body rebels. It says: ‘Stop doing this to me. I don’t want to cry every day.’ And sometimes just that thought alone would make me cry. To wake up on a Monday morning, so early, and realize that you had to cry all day because it was scheduled–I would just start crying. I’d be like, ‘Oh no, I can’t, I can’t.’ And yet I did it. I don’t know how I did it. Jack said that to me, too. He said, ‘I don’t know how you do it.’”
Anjelica Huston talked about dating Jack Nicholson, and said, “Shelley was having a hard time just dealing with the emotional content of the piece … and they didn’t seem to be all that sympathetic … She took it on. She was, I think, incredibly brave.”
