When Sally and Jack’s first guest, Mrs. Harper arrived, she told the young couple that they will love her neighbourhood, as she described it as a close-knit community.
The couple were already in love with the neighbourhood, as there was almost no danger in the location, where everyone had smiling faces and kid actions. The elders of the neighbourhood were receiving help and support from the whole community.
As the guests kept arriving, the couple noticed that everyone had red gloves on their hands. It was summer, and people were wearing red gloves. Jack and Sally were surprised.
Then Jack asked Mrs. Harper about her gloves. “Those are some interesting gloves, Mrs. Harper. Are they for a special occasion?”
“A neighbourhood tradition. You’ll get used to it.”
Mrs. Harper didn’t like the question, it was clear. Then Jack asked about the colour choice.
But she didn’t respond, and stated that he should attend other guests.
As the party was over, the couple waved goodbye their last guests too. It was an interesting night. They talked about how they were avoiding questions about the gloves.
It was weird. On the next morning, Sally found a weird note slipped under their door.
“Welcome to the neighbourhood. Don’t forget your red gloves. You’ll need them soon.”
As she asked to her husband about the note, both of them were not expecting to see a note like this. They started to wonder if their move to the neighbourhood was a good move.
On the days to come, the neighbourhood were insisting on them to get their red gloves, as they still didn’t have a pair.
One morning, Mrs. Harper wanted to talk with them. The old lady revealed that the gloves were to protect them from the evil spirits who are haunting the neighbourhood. They were shocked.
“You’ll see soon enough. Don’t wait too long to get your gloves.”
It was a superstition for them, as they laughed at it.
Then the things started with small events. First, their tools went missing. Then weird symbols started to scratched onto their yard, and lately they started to hear whispers and footsteps out of their windows.
They started to get scared. Maybe Mrs. Harper was right. They needed answers. And the final straw was the doll they found in their living room, a red-gloved voodoo doll.
Then the old lady revealed. It was just a terrible neighbourhood prank which was coming from long decades before. It was a tradition. Their way to welcome new couples into their neighbourhood.
“Exactly! It’s a little test of your resolve, and you two passed with flying colors. Welcome to the neighbourhood, officially!”
