Nancy was grieving for her son’s passing, which happened 23 years ago. 61-year-old Nancy never missed the day of her son’s birthday, where she would bake Henry’s favourite apple and cinnamon pie and leave it on her son’s grave.
Henry was 17 when he passed away. And since that, it was a tradition for Nancy to celebrate her son’s birthdays. It was easing the pain, which she was feeling for the last 23 years.
She would leave the pie, and on the next day, she would come back and clean what is left from the pie.
That year, she found a clean plate and a note on it. Her heart skipped a beat. “Thank you,” was written on the note.
Nancy was not happy that someone else ate the pie she baked for her son. She decided to catch the person who ate the pie. She felt that someone else violated her tradition she had with her son.
She baked another pie that night, and placed it on her son’s grave in the morning. Then she hid in the distance and waited for the criminal to come and eat the pie. She was ready to catch whomever it was.
An hour had passed, and Nancy saw a little body approaching to the pie. She was not imagining the thief to be this small.
A boy, who couldn’t be older than nine, with dirty face and clothes was walking towards the pie hesitantly. He didn’t directly take the pie. He pulled a paper and pencil from his pocket and wrote something on it.
Nancy’s anger was gone. When the boy started to eat the pie slowly, Nancy walked towards him. When boy noticed Nancy, he was scared. He dropped the pie.
“I’m sorry, I’m really sorry! I was just so hungry, and the pie was so good. Please don’t be mad.”
Nancy smiled to the boy and knelt towards him and asked his name. “Jimmy.”
Then Nancy patted Jimmy’s head, “it’s okay. You don’t have to steal pies. If you’re hungry, all you had to do was ask.”
Then Jimmy praised the pie. He explained that he never ate something that good. Nancy smiled, and held his hand. “Come with me, I’ll bake you a fresh pie, just for you.”
When they were at Nancy’s home, Jimmy was nervous still. She watched Jimmy eat the whole pie by himself. “This is the best pie I’ve ever had,” he said after finishing it.
She thought that fate introduced Jimmy to him. She was yearning for her late son, and now she found a nine-year-old homeless boy. She believed that this was a divine intervention and decided to adopt Jimmy.
