That day, Jack was happy that he was taking his stepson and his friends to the amusement park. He always wanted to be acknowledged by Eli, his stepson. He wished for Eli to see him as a family member, not the man who loves his mother.
As they were in the car, the children were happily talking about the rides they were going to be in. The energy in the car was high.
Jack waited while the children were taking the rides, and he joined them in some of them.
Then they went to the rollercoaster. Jack was nervous about the rollercoaster, as it was looking dangerously thrilling. The children were barely twelve. “How about we start with something a bit less wild?” Jack asked as he was concerned about their safety.
The boys disappointed, and accepted what Jack said. They spent some time in different rides, during one ride, Jack brought slushies to the children. That was when he heard them talking.
“Your mom’s husband is so boring; we have to go without him next time!” A friend of Eli said. Other friends joked and laughed, but not Eli. He was not smiling. He defended Jack then.
“My dad would never just ruin the fun for us.” Eli responded. He added that his dad wanted to protect them from harm.
Hearing that, incredibly made Jack emotional. He stood there for some seconds to keep his tears away. Eli called him dad. Not directly to his face, but to his friends. Jack was Eli’s dad.
As he brought the slushies, the children thanked him. Their amusement park journey ended with bumper cars. Eli wanted to drive with Jack, his father. They had a great time in there. That ride was the best one for them.
When they returned to their neighbourhood, they left Eli’s friends at their home and went back to their home. As Eli stepped out of the car, he waited for Jack, and hugged to him.
“Thanks Dad!”
