On the 1st of May, 2024, Taizhou Zoo, in Jiangsu province caused a stir with their exhibit of pandas, where in truth they were only dogs dyed in black and white.

The officials of the zoo had confirmed that they are dying Chow Chow dogs to make them look like pandas.

In truth, the zoo doesn’t have any panda in their property. They also are stating that they are not trying to trick anyone that they are indeed exhibiting pandas.

“This is just a new display we offer to visitors. We are not charging extra.”

“The wording ‘featuring Chow Chow dogs’ is correct and exactly describes what they are, so we are not cheating our visitors,” a worker from the zoo said a Chinese media outlet.

The video shared by Shangai Post went viral on social media, where the media outlet captioned the video as, “Taizhou Zoo in Jiangsu Province dyed two chow chow puppies black and white and promoted them as so-called ‘panda dogs.’”

There were many positive comments:

“Yes, people. The zoo tried to deceive you. But look how stinkin’ CUTE they are!!!!”

“The whole ecosystem [in] which China thrives, revolves around something patent.”

On the other hand, there were many criticism too:

“This is really a shameful act. Chow Chows can’t say anything about it unfortunately.”

“Makes you wonder how all animals are treated there, right? Poor animals.”

A zoo spokeperson had talked about the situation in his interview with Sky News as, “People also dye their hair. Natural dye can be used on dogs if they have long fur.”

“There are no panda bears at the zoo and we wanted to do this as a result.”
