Chad Groeschen, lost a sight in one eye after he slept with “Night and Day” contact lenses. The man from Cincinnati felt a sharp pain in his eye, as he woke from his sleep. Since 2015, Groeschen is waiting for a cornea transplant.
“Halfway through the day my eyes started itching, and I thought it was probably allergies, so I popped them out. The next morning the vision in my left eye started to turn cloudy.”
“The kind of contacts I have are called Night and Day’ contacts, and it was my impression you could leave them in for 30 days straight,” Groeschen shared in an interview.
“I figured the less I was messing with my eyes, the better.”
Despite some contact lenses are offering “continuous wear,” from one to four weeks, American Academy of Opthalmology revealed that overnight wear will likely result with an infection, which leads to blindness.
39-year-old Groeschen learned that he was infected with Pseudomonas bacteria. In few days, the sculptor lost sight in his left eye.
“Good vision contributes to overall well-being and independence for people of all ages, so it’s important not to cut corners on healthy contact lens wear and care,” CDC Medical Epidemiologist Jennifer Cope shared.
“We are finding that many wearers are unclear about how to properly wear and care for contact lenses,” Doctor said.
Also, in 2022, a 22-year-old man, Mike Krumholz suffered the same fate as Groeschen. He had a sleep of 40 minutes with his contact lenses on his eyes, and that caused with an infection.
“There is no pain out there that I could ever imagine worse than this. Even the strongest medicines do nothing. And the worst part is, I do not know if I will ever get vision back in my eye at only 21 years old.” The man shared in his post.
“I have not been able to step outside for 30+ days and I have my hurricane shutters up to protect me from light.”
