Back in 2016, 3-year-old Bryan-Andrew got chicken pox. He had a sore neck and swelling, and other than that, he was fine.
23-year-old mother of Bryan-Andrew and his brother Austin, Jasmine Shortland, left her children at her mother’s house for a day. Her third son, baby Ivan was at home and she didn’t want him to get infected.
Austin had chickenpox before, and he had no complications during his sick time. Jasmine thought Bryan-Andrew would be the same too.
But things turned into a nightmare.
When the morning arrived, she couldn’t wake up the little Bryan-Andrew. As they realised that something was wrong, they immediately called paramedics, but sadly, the boy was long gone.
“The night before he was running around. He was happy. He was laughing and joking. It just doesn’t make sense,” Jasmine, the grieving mother said.
The doctors made a horrible discovery few weeks later. Bryan-Andrew got contracted A strep. It turned out that Bryan-Andrew scratched his chicken pox, and that caused the infection.
“There were no symptoms because it was so rare he just had normal symptoms for mumps. He had no rash, nothing that you would normally have,” Jasmine shared.
“His body was so small he couldn’t fight it and it turned into sepsis. It is just weird that there were no symptoms.”
After losing Bryan Andrew, Jasmine learned that she was 10 weeks pregnant. Sadly, she experienced a miscarriage due to the stress she was under.
“I didn’t find out until I had stomach ache. It was absolutely awful. I nearly lost my life,” she said. “I lost 75% of my body’s blood. The nurses said there was someone watching over me that day and I knew it was Bryan-Andrew.”
